Yogurt Success

Posted on 02/20/202002/20/2020 by Carla Seidl

I tried making yogurt at home for the first time this week, and it was a success! While a little more liquidy than perhaps ideal, the yogurt was also less sour than plain store-bought kinds, requiring very little sweetener to taste sweet. And hands-on preparation time was very low. I used a small crock pot, loosely following the recipe here with organic, whole milk yogurt, and starter yogurt from a store-bought Seven Stars Farm container. It feels empowering to be able to do this at home, and liberating to be responsible for fewer plastic containers (I am intrigued by reading that if I use a little of this batch to re-culture every seven days, I can potentially re-use it “forever“(!)). I don’t think I will be disciplined enough to make that happen, but that sure would be a lot of containers of store-bought yogurt saved. I will at least be making homemade yogurt once in a while now, and hopefully more than that. I encourage you all to try, too!
